Is Working From Home for YOU

Who Wants to Work Part-Time

Nearly one in five workers work part-time in the U.S. and by 2020, that figure is expected to rise to 40 percent. At FlexJobs, we see a variety of people looking for part-time work such as working parents, semi-retirees, people with health issues or disabilities, military spouses, millennials, career changers, and people seeking better work-life balance.
Part-time remote opportunities are particularly attractive to a talent pool of educated and highly-skilled job seekers who don’t necessarily fit the in-office, 9-5 mold.
Here are some of the most recent statistics for part-time work:
  • Total part-time workers: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 33 million Americans are currently employed in part-time jobs.
  • Choosing part-time work: The majority (62 percent) of part-time workers choose to work part-time or freelance, challenging the misconception that most people work part-time because they can’t find full-time work.
  • Millennials: FlexJobs found that millennials, the largest generation in the workforce and vocal proponents of work flexibility, want to work part-time so they can spend quality time with loved ones (55 percent), pursue a creative passion (39 percent), and travel (38 percent).
  • Full-time workers with second, part-time jobs: A recent survey by RecruitFi also found that individuals currently working full-time are increasingly likely to seek part-time work.

About the Companies on This List

This list is based on an analysis of over 40,000 companies and their part-time telecommuting job posting histories in FlexJobs’ database between January 1, 2016 and June 30, 2016. The telecommuting jobs counted were 100 percent work-from-home, meaning they don’t require any time in an office, or commuting to and from work.
Companies of all sizes and across a variety of industries hire part-time remote workers. Education, healthcare, and marketing are top industries on this list, but others such as travel, technology and research are also included.
Are companies posting more professional-level part-time jobs than previously? Yes! FlexJobs experienced a 31 percent increase in the number of remote part-time jobs posted in our database from 2014 to 2015.
